Sports Injury Rehab Helps Patients Heal Faster

You do not need to be a professional athlete to benefit from sports injury rehab. Whether you have sustained a traumatic injury from a contact sport like football or are suffering a repetitive motion injury, such as tennis elbow, our experienced sports injury chiropractor can help these injuries heal faster. Our chiropractor in Vancouver Dr. Michael Pettet integrates traditional chiropractic adjustments with complementary therapies, including sports massage therapy, to help your sports injuries heal as quickly and safely as possible.

Chiropractic Care & Sports Massage Therapy Promotes Pain Relief and Healing

Our approach to sports injury rehab is effective because we provide both immediate pain relief while also treating the underlying trigger for our patients’ injuries. Many of our patients are surprised to learn that an undetected spinal misalignment is a contributing factor to their pain. For example, tennis elbow, also known as golf elbow, is one of the most common repetitive sports injuries. This injury, which occurs slowly over time, is triggered by an incorrect swing. A misalignment in the spine may be affecting your swing. Over time, an incorrect swing will irritate the tendons, causing a condition known as lateral epicondylitis or tennis elbow. This painful condition can be incredibly debilitating; in fact, some patients are unable to even grip a pen, much less a tennis racket.

Dr. Pettet treats tennis elbow and other sports injuries through a combination of immediate pain relief and corrective chiropractic care. The first step is to minimize a patient’s immediate pain. This can be achieved through chiropractic rehab treatments such as a hot and cold therapy, which minimize swelling. The second treatment step is to identifying the underlying spinal subluxation that is triggering the improper movement and exacerbating a patient’s pain. We use X-rays to for a precise, accurate diagnosis. Once this subluxation has been located, Dr. Pettet will use gentle, hands-on adjustments to bring proper alignment back to the spine.

In addition to chiropractic adjustments, our sports injury rehab patients also benefit from complementary therapies such as corrective exercises and sports massage. For example, high-impact sports or long distance running can damage the nerves and connective tissue in your knee. If you are runner and suffering from knee pain, then chiropractic rehab is an effective treatment option for naturally minimizing swelling and inflammation. Reducing inflammation will also help minimize pain. We teach patients corrective care exercises to strengthen the surrounding soft tissue, including dynamic warm-up and cool-down exercises. Our goal is to not only minimize pain, but also reduce the risk for future injury.

Sports massage therapy is beneficial for injury treatment and prevention. For example, if patients are training for a marathon or triathlon, regular sports massages reduce the risk for training injuries while improving performance. Massaging soft tissue removes lactic acid buildup and brings fresh, oxygen-rich blood directly to the muscles. Following sports massage therapy, our patients feel better and are more active!
