Spinal disc herniation can be incredibly painful, but it's hard to know if this is your ailment without seeing a chiropractor. This condition is characterized by disks between spinal vertebrae poking out from between the vertebrae of the spine. This can often lead to nerve irritation, which will result in pain until the problem is fixed. There are several types of spine injuries and conditions that can feel like a disc herniation, but there are some signs you should watch for to tell you if it's time to see a medical professional.

Arm or Leg Pain

Herniated discs that have occurred lower in the spine will usually cause a patient to feel pain radiating through their buttocks, thighs, calves, and feet. This is because the nerves that connect these structures to your spine are located in the lower part of the back. Similarly, herniated discs that are located n the upper part of the spine can affect the shoulders and arms. It's important to note that this pain does not necessarily have to be accompanied by pain in the spine.

Numbness

If the disk has moved to the point that it has cut off a nerve leading to one of the body's limbs, it is possible to have a feeling of numbness or tingling similar to an arm or leg falling asleep.

Weakness

If your muscles are no longer getting the right signals from the nerves they are attached to, they will likely weaken over time. If you suddenly drop objects or find you cannot lift common objects, see a chiropractor.
